Placed in the small town of Santa Margherita Ligure, Hotel Continental offers an luxury seaside retreat that seamlessly blends natural beauty with refined hospitality. A standout feature of Hotel Continental is its exclusive private beach. Holiday spot: Portofino, Italy

Nestled along the Ligurian coast, Portofino is a picture-perfect fishing village that has enchanted visitors for centuries. With its pastel-colored houses, luxury yachts, and lush Mediterranean scenery, this tiny harbor town exudes charm, sophistication, and an irresistible sense of glam.

Originally a humble fishing village, Portofino gained prominence in the early 20th century when it became a favorite retreat for European aristocrats and Hollywood celebrities. Today, it remains an exclusive destination, drawing in travelers who seek both relaxation and refinement.

Portofino is synonymous with luxury and glamour. Over the years, it has been a playground for the rich and famous, attracting celebrities, royalty, and fashion icons. Portofino's cinematic beauty has also made it a sought-after location for films and TV series. Most recently, the town served as the backdrop for the TV drama "Hotel Portofino", a period series set in the 1920s that showcases the elegance and intrigue of an upscale hotel in this stunning coastal setting. The show captures both the breathtaking scenery and the timeless sophistication that define Portofino, reinforcing its status as a dream destination.

However, Portofino is quite small, so do not expect a pulsating place ala St. Tropez.

Holiday spot: Cattolica, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Catolica is a charming seaside town that offers a perfect blend of relaxation, cultural experiences, and vibrant local life. While it may not be as famous as its neighboring destinations, such as Rimini or San Marino, Catolica is a fantastic holiday spot for those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in authentic Italian culture.

Cattolica, the Queen of the Adriatic, in ancient times was a place of transit and stopover for wayfarers travelling along the Via Flaminia, is located where Romagna gives way to the hills of the Marches, immersed in a delicate landscape and characterized by genuine, authentic hospitality.

Catolica boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the region. With soft golden sands and blue waters, it’s an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming, and beach sports. Families will appreciate the gently sloping shores, which are safe for children, while beach clubs offer sun loungers, umbrellas, and refreshments.

The town exudes a relaxed vibe, perfect for leisurely strolls along the promenade or through its quaint streets. Enjoy the colorful architecture, charming shops, and inviting cafés that line the pathways. The evening ambiance comes alive with outdoor dining, where you can savor fresh seafood and local delicacies.

Catolica is a fantastic destination for families. The town features parks, playgrounds, and family-friendly attractions like the Aquafan water park and Oltremare, an eco-friendly theme park with animal shows and rides. It is also my most visited place in Italy. And I always stay at the charming Hotel Manzoni.

Jazz club: La Fidula, Madrid, Spain

La Fídula is a renowned live music venue nestled in Madrid's historic Barrio de las Letras. This iconic club has been a cornerstone of the city's vibrant music scene for over two decades. La Fídula offers live music performances every evening, featuring some of Spain's most talented songwriters and musicians. The intimate ambiance and commitment to showcasing diverse musical genres make it a beloved spot for both locals and visitors.

Opposite to the surrounding tapas bars, La Fidula is quite dark and “closed” and is therefore a perfect place for chilled Madrid nights. According to the local rumour, the jazz club serves the best Irish coffee in the city.

Nestled along the vibrant coast of Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana Beach is a name synonymous with sun-kissed sands, samba rhythms, and unparalleled natural beauty. This world-famous beach, stretching 4 kilometers along the Atlantic Ocean, has captured the hearts of locals and tourists alike for decades, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Brazil.

Originally a quiet fishing village, it transformed in the early 20th century into a glamorous hotspot. The construction of the Copacabana Palace Hotel in 1923 marked the beginning of its rise to international fame. Whether you're a thrill-seeker, a sports enthusiast, or someone simply looking to relax, Copacabana Beach offers something for everyone. Early risers can witness a spectacular sunrise while jogging along the mosaic-patterned promenade.

Copacabana Beach is more than just a picturesque stretch of sand; it’s a cultural icon, a place where the vibrancy of Rio de Janeiro comes to life. Whether you’re soaking up the sun, dancing to samba beats, or marveling at the surrounding landscapes, Copacabana offers an experience that’s both timeless and unforgettable.

Fratres M Barbershop is not just a place to get a haircut; it’s a haven for self-care and style. Whether you need a fresh fade, a classic trim, or precision beard grooming, their team of skilled barbers ensures every client leaves looking sharp and feeling confident. With a focus on customer satisfaction, the barbers take the time to understand your preferences and tailor each service to meet your needs.

Football stadium: Sportforum Berlin, Berlin, Germany

One of the most exotic football match experiences I have had, is watching a match at level 4 in the Germany football league system between Dynamo Berlin and Energie Cottbus at the Sportforum Stadium in East Berlin in 2021. Around 2 000 enthustiatic home supporters cheered their team which won the match with a last second winning goal. The stadium is very worn and most of the spectators had to stand. But the atmosphere was euphoric and the beer serving was plentiful, as always at German football matches.

The Sportforum Berlin, located in the district of Hohenschönhausen, was established in the 1950s during the era of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Originally designed as a training center for elite athletes, the facility quickly became a cornerstone for sports development in East Germany.

Dynamo Berlin, officially known as Berliner FC Dynamo (BFC Dynamo), is a football club with a storied history that reflects the complexities of sports, politics, and society in Germany. Based in Berlin, the club was founded in 1966 and became one of the most dominant teams in East German football before the reunification of Germany in 1990. When I visted the stadium, the club played in Regionliga (level 4) in the German football division system.

The opponent, Energie Cottbus, played in the Bundesliga in the 2008-9 season.

Holiday spot: Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, Italy

Nestled on the northeastern coast of Sardinia, Costa Smeralda is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, luxurious resorts, and vibrant Mediterranean culture. This captivating destination attracts visitors from around the globe, offering a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and glamour.

Costa Smeralda translates to "Emerald Coast," a name inspired by the region’s breathtaking turquoise waters. The coastline of Costa Smeralda is dotted with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. As the sun sets, Costa Smeralda comes alive with vibrant nightlife. From chic beach clubs to lively bars, there are plenty of options for a fun night out.

And of course, as at all placed in Italy, Costa Smeralda is full of small villages with charming piazzas.

Barbershop: Staut barberstue, Tønsberg, Norway

Situated in my hometown of Tønsberg, Staut barbershop is my regular goto barbershop and a premier destination for men's grooming, offering traditional haircuts, beard trims, and classic hot towel shaves. After moving between several locations in the centre after being established in 2016, the barbershop is now located in Tolbodgaten. As a customer you are given meticulous attention to detail and exceptional service.

Esthetically, Staut, is a mix of nostagia and americana, with a splash of hipster and irony. Music played is often bluegrass or similar music.

A lot of the customers are regular, and the topics of shop conversation is about everything from sports, local news and events, world politics to everyday life.

Whether you're seeking a classic haircut, a precise beard trim, or a traditional shave, Staut Barberstue in Tønsberg offers a refined grooming experience tailored to the discerning gentleman.

Football stadium: Lofthus Road, London, England

Nestled in the heart of Shepherd's Bush, West London, Loftus Road Stadium stands as a cherished cornerstone of English football. Though modest in size compared to some of the Premier League's colossal grounds, it’s a venue rich in history, character, and a unique intimacy that few stadiums can match. For Queens Park Rangers (QPR) fans, Loftus Road isn't just a stadium—it’s home.

Despite speculation over a new stadium to accommodate QPR’s long-term ambitions, Loftus Road continues to be the club's spiritual home. Its charm and intimacy set it apart from newer, soulless arenas. To the fans, leaving Loftus Road would mean saying goodbye to a century of memories woven into the fabric of the club.

Loftus Road might not have the glitz and glamour of Wembley or the Emirates, but it has something far more precious: history, community, and an atmosphere that echoes the very soul of football. The game we watched was played a cold Friday night, but the atmosphere was impeccable.

The New York Public Library (NYPL) Main Branch, often simply referred to as the “Main Branch,” is not just a library; it’s a cultural landmark that embodies the spirit of New York City. Located at the iconic intersection of Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, this Beaux-Arts masterpiece is a hub of knowledge, history, and creativity. Whether you're a bibliophile, a history buff, or a casual visitor, the Main Branch offers a wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered.

The Main Branch is home to an extensive collection that spans centuries and cultures. From rare manuscripts to contemporary books, there’s something for everyone. The library’s special collections include the original manuscripts of famous authors like Mark Twain and the personal papers of historical figures such as Franklin D. Roosevelt.

So, grab a book, find a cozy spot in the reading room, and lose yourself in the world of literature—there's no better place to do it than at the NYPL.

Race: Tønsbergdysten triathlon, Tønsberg, Norway

Tønsbergdysten triathlon is an event taking place just outside my hometown Tønsberg, in June each year.

The rece starts and ends at Ringshaugstranda, a popular local beach known for its clear waters and sandy shores. The race is sprint distance, with 750 meters swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run. The athletes start their journey with a swim in the Oslofjord, a body of water that is as picturesque as it is invigorating. The athletes then get onto their bikes and head toward the coastal village of Åsgårdstrand before returning to Ringshaustanda and a new transition before the last part which is a running roundtrip to the Vallø peninsula, before crossing the finishing line at Ringshaugstranda.

Whether you’re a seasoned triathlete or a newcomer to the sport, the Tønsbergdysten racecourse is designed to be both challenging and accessible. The varied terrain, stunning views, and supportive atmosphere ensure that every athlete leaves with lasting memories.

For those considering their first triathlon, Tønsbergdysten is an excellent choice. The course’s beauty and the event’s organization make it a standout race on the Scandinavian triathlon calendar.

Football stadium: Arena Civica Gianni Brera, Milan, Italy

Milan, a city known for its fashion, design, and the San Siro football stadium, holds an often-overlooked gem at its heart: the Arena Civica Gianni Brera. Nestled in the picturesque Parco Sempione, this neoclassical stadium is not just an architectural marvel but a testament to the city’s history and cultural legacy.

The Arena Civica was inaugurated on August 18, 1807, under the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. Designed by the renowned architect Luigi Canonica, the arena was inspired by ancient Roman amphitheaters, combining classical elegance with practical functionality. Its original purpose was to host public events such as horse races, festivals, and even naval battles—thanks to its ingenious design, which allowed it to be flooded with water.

Over the years, the arena adapted to Milan's evolving cultural landscape. In the 20th century, it became synonymous with sports, hosting football matches, athletics, and even cycling events. It was renamed the Arena Gianni Brera in 2002 to honor the celebrated Italian sports journalist and writer Gianni Brera.

The match I attended was Internazionale vs AC Milan in the italian women’s top league. The match was played on a beautiful sunny and chilly Saturday afternoon. The match were quite open, but Inter scored the winning goal in the middle of the second half, securing well deserved 3 point.

Holiday spot: Santa Margherita, Italy

Imagine lying on a sunbed at the hotel´s bathing area sipping ice cold rosé wine, while hearing the sound of people chatting and swimming in the crystal clear water. Benvenuto a Santa Margherita.

Nestled along the shimmering Ligurian coastline, Santa Margherita Ligure is a charming, picturesque town that often slips under the radar in favor of its more famous neighbors like Portofino and Cinque Terre. However, for those who venture just a little off the beaten path, Santa Margherita reveals itself as a true gem, rich in culture, history, and natural beauty.

Santa Margherita Ligure, or simply "Santa" to locals, is located in Italy's Liguria region on the Riviera di Levante. Known for its stunning Mediterranean landscapes, colorful harbor, and vibrant culture, the town embodies the timeless Italian charm that draws travelers back again and again. From pastel-colored buildings lining the waterfront to the gentle lapping of waves against fishing boats, Santa Margherita is the perfect destination for those seeking relaxation and authenticity.

Walking through Santa Margherita is an absolute delight. Start with the harbor area, where rows of fishing boats and yachts bob gently in the water against a backdrop of colorful houses. You can spend hours wandering the narrow cobbled streets, which are filled with artisanal boutiques, gelaterias, and traditional trattorias.

Art museum: Haugar, Tønsberg, Norway

Haugar Museum of Art is located in my home town of Tønsberg. The museum is one of my favorite go-tos on Sunday walks, situated at a hill in the middle of the town. Not to mention their excellent cafe.

Haugar Kunstmuseum stands out as a significant cultural institution. With a focus on contemporary art, the museum offers a vibrant platform for both established and emerging artists. Designed by the architectural firm Jarmund/Vigsnæs, the museum features an open and inviting space that encourages exploration and reflection. The museum's collection emphasizes Norwegian contemporary art, featuring a diverse array of paintings, sculptures, photography, and installations. Exhibitions change regularly, ensuring that each visit offers something new. In addition to its permanent collection, Haugar hosts temporary exhibitions that highlight current themes and artists, allowing visitors to discover fresh talents and artistic movements.

Exotic getaway: Muscat, Oman

Late autumn is the perfect time for planning exotic getaways. One of my most positive experiences for such travels, is a trip to Muscat in Oman back in 2015. Oman, a captivating blend of tradition and modernity, offering a unique glimpse into the heart of Arabian culture. Muscat, nestled between the rugged Hajar Mountains and the Arabian Sea, is not just a political hub; it’s a vibrant city rich in history, architecture, and stunning landscapes. Muscat’s history dates back thousands of years, serving as a vital trading port for merchants and travelers. Its strategic location made it a melting pot of cultures, with influences from Persia, East Africa, and India. The city has retained its heritage through its architecture, markets, and local traditions, making it a fascinating place for history enthusiasts.

One of the most striking features of Muscat is its architecture. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a must-visit. With its magnificent dome and intricate tile work, it can accommodate thousands of worshippers and is an emblem of Oman’s rich Islamic heritage. Another highlight is the Royal Opera House, a stunning venue that hosts international performances and showcases the Sultanate's dedication to the arts.

No visit to Muscat is complete without exploring its bustling souks. The Mutrah Souk is a labyrinth of narrow alleyways filled with shops selling everything from spices and textiles to silver jewelry and traditional Omani khanjars (daggers). The vibrant atmosphere, combined with the scent of frankincense and spices, makes for an unforgettable shopping experience.

Omani cuisine is a delightful reflection of its diverse cultural influences. In Muscat, you can savor traditional dishes such as shuwa (slow-cooked lamb) and harees (wheat and meat porridge). Don’t miss the chance to try Omani coffee, a fragrant blend often served with dates.

Oman in governed by a Sultan, which makes it a quite “exotic” regime. The Sultan has extensive powers, including the authority to issue laws, appoint ministers, and control the military.

Nestled in the vibrant city of Amsterdam, the Johan Cruyff Arena stands as a monument not only to football but to the spirit of innovation and excellence that Johan Cruyff embodied. Opened in 1996, this impressive stadium has become the home of AFC Ajax, one of the most successful football clubs in Europe. Named after the legendary player and coach Johan Cruyff, the arena reflects his profound impact on the game.

The Johan Cruyff Arena is notable for its state-of-the-art facilities and its unique architectural design. With a seating capacity of around 55,000, it boasts an impressive retractable roof, allowing for a versatile environment suited for both football matches and a variety of events, including concerts and festivals. This adaptability makes it one of the most sought-after venues in the Netherlands.
